Diapers
by chris on Jun.22, 2008, under Uncategorized
The diaper summit has begun. We’re pretty sure we will go with cloth diapers. Environmental awareness is fine and all. However, I’m more concerned with saving a cool $1000 over the cost of diapering a kid.
The question is not cloth or disposable so much. Poop is poop. I think I’ll deal. But within the cloth realm there are tons of options:

Prefold Diapers are basically like traditional diapers. There are different ways you can fold them. They are the cheapest, but also prone to leaks, especially with explosive breast milk poops.

Fitted diapers: This is basically like a cloth Pampers diaper. More expensive, but better guards against messes outside of the diaper “theater of war.”

Then there are diaper covers- the modern day equivalent to rubber pants. These cover the diaper so that any mess has a better chance of staying contained. I think you buy something like 1 cover for every 5-7 diapers.

The all-in-one diaper is diaper and diaper cover all in one. They are the most expensive, but touted as the most convenient option that is most like the disposable diaper.
All of this says nothing of the various cloth types- organic cotton, hemp, and a bunch of other high-tech options.

My bottom line- It is a crappy job, so saving money is my main concern.
